Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens are 18th-century garden with rare plants. Magnificent Victorian walled garden set in 20 acres of woodland valley and have a unique micro climate. Winner of the Silver medal at Chelsea and Silver gilt at Hampton Court Show.

The history of Abbotsbury is tied closely with the creation of the monastery that once dominated the village. A short distance away, a wall was built for a sheltered kitchen garden to provide fresh produce for the Fox-Strangways family. That walled garden is now the very heart of the Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens that we know today.

The range of plants in the garden was expanded by William Fox-Strangways, 4th Earl of Ilchester. He was a diplomat on foreign service, a leading botanist and an expert on the flora of Europe. He introduced many new species into cultivation, from a wide range of countries like Chile and Canary Isles.

After the great storm of 1990, a major restoration project has been underway. Many new exotic and unusual flowers have been introduced to this fabulous garden.

The restaurant has a good range of food and drinks. This is a beautiful, hidden haven nestled on the stunning Jurassic coastline. Entering the gardens is nothing short of magical,
