Best time to visit Russia

A most popular time to visit St. Petersburg is from mid-June to September. Although it's more expensive and very busy, St. Petersburg's near 24 hours of daylight, called White Nights not to be missed.

Despite the perception that Russia is always cold, St Petersburg has distinct seasons. Summers are warm, but July is definitely one of those months when there’s a high chance of being caught out on a very hot day pushing through crowds and large museum queues.

In September St Petersburg turns a golden, red and purple colour. The weather became milder with less crowds. I would recommend visiting in beginning of the month because, at the end of the month, the fountains in the Peterhoff park shut down for the winter. They are something not to be missed.

Winter is a great time to visit too, and even the weather drops below freezing. Celebrating New Year is more significant than Christmas in Russia. Even Farther Frost, Russian Santa, visit kids on New Year Eve night, not Christmas. Most of the offices closed for a week over this time, which can mean that most attractions will be more crowded than usual, but a number of bars and restaurants hold parties, large celebrations around the city. You can visit the ballet, and a particular Christmas favourite is the Nutcracker– it will be on throughout the winter season..

We visited in February because of the beautiful winter scenery and snow is magical. Also, it's the cheapest time to visit despite school holidays.
